Description

An introduction to frameworks for analyzing the nature of distance education from a functionalist, interpretive, or emancipatory systems approach. Appropriate diagramming techniques are used as a means to examine the organization and management of distance education systems.

Reflection

The Distance Education Systems course showed me a broader view of distance education as opposed to the specialized views of every other course in the program. Though I had difficulty understanding a multitude of the concepts, frameworks, and theories of this course, I feel that I benefited from understanding their relationship to different distance education systems. The diagramming element of the course was fun, and beneficial to writing and adjusting thoughts for my assignments on paper. This course also touched on a subject that was, and still is very interesting to me…course teams. From the debate on course teams, I still suggest that course teams include those who thoroughly understand the demographic of learners, are online instructors, and subject matter experts.
